14-3-3η Informs the RA Continuum of Care

Vancouver, BC – October 28, 2016. At the world’s premier rheumatology conference, the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting (ACR) in Washington, DC, November 11-16, international investigators from Sweden, the United States, Romania and Japan will present data on 14-3-3η blood testing in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

“These studies build on and independently validate previously published clinical data that 14-3-3η uniquely complements a clinical assessment and other blood test to optimize RA patient management along the continuum of disease,” says Dr. Yoshiya Tanaka, Professor & Chairman, of The First Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine University of Occupational & Environmental Health, Japan.

A clinical assessment and serological markers such as CRP, give an accurate view of the patient’s clinical disease activity. As a complement to that, 14-3-3η reflects active cellular joint damage processes that are underway, which can’t be seen on clinical exam or informed by acute phase reactants. “In agreement with 14-3-3η’s role in the joint damage pathway and based on consistent observations across cohorts of patients, from very early RA right through to established disease, persistently elevated 14-3-3η blood levels predict rapid joint damage progression, even in patients who achieve clinical remission,” says Dr. Gilles Boire, Professor in the Division of Rheumatology of the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke. He adds, “Elevated 14-3-3η levels potentially mandate earlier and tighter therapeutic strategies to treat to radiographic remission.”
