Biomarkers of Arthritis
Augurex’s lead biomarker is in the area of arthritis where there is a
significant unmet need for a blood test that helps doctors assess the degree of
disease activity through an objective measure, where currently, arthritis
disease is determined by subjective clinical assessments such as x-rays,
Disease Activity Score (DAS), Health Assessment Questionnaires (HAQ) and
swollen and tender joint counts. Early detection and close follow-up of an
arthritis patient is important so that physicians can select suitable therapies
and determine how aggressively to treat a patient with the goal of changing the
course of the disease and mitigating irreversible joint damage.
Initiatives are being led by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the
European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) to establish quantitative objective
indicators of disease activity to assist in routine clinical practice and for
outcomes measures in clinical trials.
